Dear Parents, Friends and Alumni,
50 years ago I started a journey as a 17 year old counselor at an afterschool sports club, called Champions Sports Club.
My journey started with a lucky break from Leo Mayer, the Director of Champions Sports Club, who took a chance on this boy from Brooklyn. I had never worked as a sports counselor. I quickly discovered my love for teaching sports to children while attending college, and working for Champions Sports Club.
I have been so fortunate to continue this journey over the last 50 years, learning the roles of being a Counselor, Head Counselor, Director and Owner of both Champions Sports Club, and a boy's sleep away camp, Camp Wildwood, in Bridgton, Maine.
In September 1991, I made the life changing decision to go out on my own, and start a new afterschool sports program in New York City. With the advice from my supportive wife, we called it "Gilsports For Kids." In the Fall of 1991, with just one school, one day a week, Gilsports For Kids was born.
Over the years, Gilsports for Kids has expanded to 5 days a week, with seasonally changing programs in over 15 schools in Brooklyn and Manhattan. More notably, in the last 50 years I have had the honor of teaching thousands of children the joy of sports and watching them grow-up during their time at either Champions Sports Club, Camp Wildwood, or, in the last 30 years, at Gilsports For Kids.
My career highlights have been the time I spent with these children, watching their progress from hitting their first baseball, scoring their first goal, putting on their first pair of ice skates, or learning a new skill during ice skating season.
Additionally, I have also enjoyed speaking with parents and being able to engage in discussion about their child's progress, or hearing how much your children enjoyed
their afternoons at Gilsports For Kids throughout the years.
As an added bonus, and sign I am getting older in the last 5-10 years, I have also had the pleasure of getting to know 2nd generation children !
Most recently, my wife and I welcomed our first grandchild, Kaley Megan Rubin into the world in October, 2016. As extremely proud grandparents, my wife and I continue to spend as much time with our granddaughter as possible, and I have begun to look to her future and the opportunities I can offer her.
With that in mind, I graciously announce my retirement, and the closing of Gilsports for Kids. I would like to thank everyone for allowing me the opportunity to be part of their family's lives, and for taking this amazing and humbling journey with me. I am excited to start the next chapter of my life, spending more time with my wife in our retirement, expert babysitting for our granddaughter, and traveling as the spirit moves us.
